There are three major types of electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles (e.g. Tesla Model 3), hybrid electric vehicles (e.g. Toyota Prius) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (e.g. Volvo XC90 Recharge).
- Battery electric vehicles’ motors are fully powered by the electrical energy from the battery. A typical battery electric vehicle can travel for more than 130 km after a full charge. Some advanced models can have a driving range up to 400 km.
- Hybrid electric vehicles are mostly powered by the petrol or diesel engines and sometimes by the back-up battery which is charged from the energy lost during the vehicle’s braking.
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can be run by both petrol or diesel engine, and electricity from the battery which has to be connected to an external power for a full recharge.

How long does it take to charge an EV?
How long it will take to charge an EV’s battery depends on the type of EV charger HK and the battery capacity. For a 18kWh battery, it will take around 6-7 hours for a full charge up by a standard 13A EV charger while it will take about 3-4 hours for a full recharge by a medium 32A charging. DC Quick Charging 50kw can further reduce the charging time – charging up to 80% of the battery’s capacity in just 30 minutes. In general, most electric vehicles can support standard 13A EV charging. However, the most popular EV charger is the medium 32A charging because it is sufficient for the daily use of most electric vehicle owners and saves charging time significantly.
What types of EV charger HK are there ?
To charge the electric vehicles with the EV charger, a charging cable with the corresponding charging standard is required. In general, the IEC standard and the CCS Combo standard are used by electric vehicles from European manufacturers for medium charging and DC quick charging respectively. Japanese electric vehicle makers use the SAE Standard for medium charging and the CHAdeMO standard for DC quick charging.
To apply for the electricity supply for EV charger, vehicle owners or the management office are required to submit an application form to the electricity provider with the estimated loading, schematic wiring diagram and proposed service location of the EV charger. The electricity provider will then evaluate the availability of capacity of power supply in a few days. All these cannot be done without the support from a professional EV charger consultant.
